Unlike his brother, Sam did not spend the entire car ride done up in his Western gear. He also was not giddy like a five year-old, either, but Sam didn’t spend his entire life worshipping Clint Eastwood, so he figured he was allowed. However, why he did it was made abundantly clear by the way Lana looked at him when they arrived back home at her place in Metropolis.

Very, very clear.

Dean tossed Sam the keys to the Impala, told him to take a hike, and Sam was more than happy to oblige. At first he was just going to drive around for a while until he heard from Dean, but when that call did come a few hours later, he knew he needed a new plan.

“Gonna be AWOL for a couple days, Sammy. Go find a way to keep yourself occupied. Check out the porn channel.”

Sam would have pointed out that just because they had the ashes didn’t mean that they should start celebrating, but Sam also liked seeing his brother happy. In this instance, at least, he wasn’t going to be the killjoy. What it did mean, however, was that he needed a more concrete way to spend his time. As awesome as his brother’s suggestion was, he wasn’t going to spend it looking at porn.

He pulled over to the side of the road, going through the contacts on his phone as he tried to sort out what to do, when his eyes wandered up towards the clock tower. He and Chloe were … friends. Maybe. He was still unsure of his relationships with most people in his brother’s life, given his sudden resurrection from the dead, but he was pretty sure that he and Chloe were okay. His fingers drummed against the steering wheel for a moment, before scrolling down to that particular contact in his (new) phone, and hitting send. If she was home, maybe that was something to do.

If not, he was back at square one.

[Assumptions made in this post: Chloe and Jimmy actually made a home out of Watchtower, she still lives there, and Lana lives in Metropolis. If any of these are wrong, let me know and I’ll change.]

Clark is a hero, and Tess believes in him.

Tess doesn’t believe in much.

There’s too much evil in the world. She’s bred from it. She has red hair and the killer instincts, all the marks of a Luthor that make her dangerous and deadly. She has been raised in a world full of wolves, of people who take what they want from you without any regard for what it does to you. Her father took her innocence, Oliver took her heart and Lex took her trust. By the time they finish, there’s nothing left but a cold woman who would rather conquer the world than live in it. She wants the world to burn under her feet, and Lex’s money and power gives her the means to do it. Add in Queen Industries, and Tess Mercer has the world at her fingertips. And according to her pride, that’s supposed to be enough.

And then there’s people like Clark.

Actually, there’s only Clark.

Clark saves the world without cause to, without any expectation of reward—or need of it, for that matter. Tess doesn’t understand him, but he opens her world again, gives her a messiah to follow in a world that lacks one. It’s almost as though he doesn’t see the darkness that leaks at the corners, threatening to swallow everything whole. He doesn’t see the things coming to destroy him, he doesn’t see the world that would tear him down and nail him to their own version of a cross. Judas lurks in every corner, in every face, and the wolves in the world would rather control him than let him save them.
